Changes and Improvements at PINWR!
Volunteers for our nation’s first wildlife refuge are available now at the kiosk at the Centennial Trail entrance to answer questions and help you navigate the pristine lands and trails. Visit the refuge between 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM and talk to wildlife experts to get all of the information you need to get the most out of your Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge adventure!
Also, newly installed “Iron Ranger” boxes, facilitated by PICS, make it easier than ever to donate to the Refuge, helping facilitate and complete new projects like the latest Wildlife Trail, and succeed in its mission to preserve and protect the wildlife!
The new trail is a half-mile out-and-back (1 mile round trip) trail that connects directly to Jungle Trail, Bird's Impoundment Trail, and the Joe Michael Memorial Trail.
The Wildlife Trail is flat, grassy, and passes through a number of habitats, including freshwater wetlands and uplands. When passing the freshwater ponds, keep an ear out for our more secretive birds, like Rails, Gallinules, and Sora. In the trees, watch for Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, and various Warbler species. During the rainy season, this trail may be seasonally flooded. In the summer, be sure to bring plenty of water as there is little to no shade on this trail!
